To understand and appreciate my creations for their richness and cultural connectivity, one should know a little about my multi-ethnical background. Born to Indian parents, my parents migrated to Spain, where my siblings and I were born and brought up. Meeting my husband Sunil meant exposure to Sri Lanka and another cross continental move.
I draw my inspiration from my many travels overseas and my multicultural upbringing. I like to think of my work as a mix of Asian and European. Sri Lanka has an abundance of extraordinary precious and semi precious stones, so drawing inspiration from their colors and cuts is easy. My work emerges akin to a solution for a puzzle, where I sit down with a great variety of stones and combine them to come up with exclusive pieces of handmade jewellery.
Every piece is handmade and unique. I enjoy designing modern yet classy pieces however I stay away from experimenting with anything bohemian, I like very fine and defined pieces.
My formal higher education was actually in Child Psychology, so my brush with jewellery and gems was quite accidental. I started off with no proper background in gemology, however I have learned through various books, courses and other jewelers over the years.
Despite the demands of a thriving design enterprise, I count motherhood as my top priority; I always ensure am there for my two children (Yash 8 yrs and Nirvaan 4 years) regardless of how drawn I am with work. I am lucky to have a great family support system that helps me juggle my roles as mother and as businesswoman with ease.
Aiyaana has been producing jewellery for selected customers around the world on a private appointment basis for the past 4 years. With our website, we hope to be able to allow more people to enjoy our jewellery.
